Meet Prusament Resin Model+, our reformulated SLA resin with faster exposure, better impact resistance, and reduced pigment sedimentation!

The Prusament Model Resin has long been a flagship of our SLA lineup. It offers reliable and fast printing in detail, and most of all, it is among the safest resins on the market. But, as always, it can be even better. Over the years, the Model resin formulation has undergone several changes due to the inconsistent reactivity of the materials used. This led to several minor adjustments to exposure times. And while we did our best to make these changes hardly noticeable, we wanted to do even better. Plus, we were not entirely satisfied with the resin’s low impact resistance.

That’s why we decided to give the Model resin a more noticeable upgrade – and this is where the name, Prusament Resin Model+, comes from.

What’s new?

We reworked the formula to improve reactivity and mechanical resistance. The result is resin with consistent (in time and across resin batches) print properties, exposure times as fast as 2-2.6s per layer (0.05 mm, depending on the printer and color), improved impact resistance, and ductility. Prusament Resin Model+ moves one step closer to industrial resins while remaining as easy to print as hobby resins.

Another improvement is in pigment sedimentation. This issue was especially noticeable in light colors (white, grey…). The Model resin had to be mixed thoroughly to evenly distribute the pigment from the bottom of the canister (vat). The Model+ formulation significantly reduces sedimentation, making the work more comfortable. We still recommend mixing it, though, at least for a short time.

What to keep in mind

Since the Model+ resin acts slightly differently from Model, there are a few things you should take into account. First, you’ll notice a slight pine scent. This doesn’t mean the resin is in any way more toxic. Quite the contrary, the final Model+ resin formulation is even safer than the Model Resin. And honestly, for some of us, the pine odor is quite pleasant.

Second, the supports act slightly differently. This depends closely on the material’s physical properties, and because the resin is more ductile and impact-resistant, it also means supports are harder to remove. Instead of using thick, sparse support heads, we recommend a dense mesh of support points with small head diameters. If done properly, the support removal feels like unzipping Velcro and leaves few noticeable marks.

Third, the resin comes with lower high-temperature resistance. This is hardly noticeable in common (and less demanding) use cases, such as tabletop miniatures and other visual models. However, technical components may perform poorly under elevated temperatures.

Pros and cons

Pros
Maximum possible health safety
Low shrinkage (6-7%)
Short exposure times
Does not contain Bisphenol A, TPO, ACMO
Improved pigment stability
14% BioBased content
Alabaster White and Solid Grey offer high opacity for maximal detail sharpness

Cons
Support removal is recommended before curing
Higher viscosity (300-400 mPas)
Longer pre-exposure wait times or printing at 25-30 °C required
Uncured resin might pose a health risk. Use protective equipment (nitrile rubber gloves and glasses)

Material price, weight, and color

You can get all colors of the Prusament Resin Model+ 1kg for 71.99 USD (import duties incl.) / 73.99 EUR (VAT incl.). Similar to other Prusament resins, this material was developed and tested on the Original Prusa SL1S SPEED, with which the resin prints flawlessly at 2-2.4s per layer, depending on color (16s base layer, 0.05 mm layer height).

Best use

While the formulation has changed, the use cases remain pretty much the same. The easy printing, great resolution, broad color range, and low toxicity make it usable for everyday use: from rapid prototypes to hobby models. And as for the professional use, the Model+ resin can be used for dental applications, vacuum forming, silicone molding and other fields, where high precision and color consistency are a must.

Honestly, keeping the resin safe, easy to use, and compliant with European legislation is not easy, but we firmly believe it is worth putting in all the extra care into its development. We’re happy to offer you material that is precise, reliable, and safe. We hope you’ll create something really cool with the new Model+!

Happy printing!
