Buying small batches of polymer pellets for a laboratory or workshop may be difficult: Raw materials are usually sold in tons or at least hundreds of kilos. But when you need just a few (dozen) kilos for lab use, or large-format FGF printing, only a handful of manufacturers can help you. We know the struggle and decided to do something about it. From now on, we offer Prusament pellets in packages for small-scale use, weighing up to 14 kg.

Pre-dried pellets ready to use

One of the extra benefits is that we ship the pellets pre-dried. In most use cases, this makes them ready to use immediately after unpacking. Generally speaking, the raw material pellets are a commodity shipped with high moisture content. We dry the pellets upon arrival, before manufacturing Prusament. We simply take a portion of these dry pellets, seal them in a plastic canister or bag to keep the moisture level low, and ship them to you. These are the exact pellets we use for manufacturing Prusament, our premium-grade filament.

So, what are these materials actually good for?

Perfect for large-format 3D printing (FGF)

The first scenario is large-format 3D printing. This is often done using Fused Granular Fabrication (FGF), aka direct printing from pellets. This type of additive manufacturing offers lower prices compared to traditional FFF/FDM printing because it bypasses the filament manufacturing process. The second benefit is the speed: pellet extruders can lay down material at rates of several kilograms per hour, much faster than standard filament printing. The packaging is ideal for printing medium-sized models, such as furniture or sculptures.

Research and education

Other fields of use are research and education. Researchers (or hobbyists) can mix our natural, uncolored, base polymer pellets with custom masterbatches to test new colorants, UV stabilizers, or mechanical additives (like carbon nanotubes or glass fibers). University labs operating desktop filament extruders can use Prusament Pellets to extrude their own experimental 1.75mm or 2.85mm filaments. There is no need to buy large quantities of material for educational purposes. Prusament pellets offer an affordable option for material scientists.

Material colors, weights, and pricing

We’re launching four materials in their natural colors, packed in two sizes. The smaller packages are sent in 5L canisters, while the larger ones are packed in aluminum-plastic bags:

For easier handling of the canisters, we recommend printing this opening wrench by SquasherJoe and this extension for easier dispensing.

Happy printing!
