Good news, everyone: we are adding another online course to our Prusa Academy lineup – our fourth this year! These courses offer a quick and easy way to learn about various 3D printing-related topics, using a combination of short paragraphs of text, pictures, and videos.

This time, we’re introducing the 3D Printing and Modeling for Beginners course for users of the Prusa XL printer. It is designed to help you master the XL’s advanced features, no matter if you are a total newbie or a 3D printing veteran. There is a dedicated lesson on multi-material printing, which makes the course worth reading even if your XL has already been up and running for some time!

The course is available on our e-shop for just 5 USD/EUR; however, it is completely free for all XL owners, both new and existing, regardless of the printer variant (i.e., either for assembled and semi-assembled models). You will find the course under the My Courses button in your Prusa Account.

Like our other courses, this one includes quizzes. Pass them all to earn a certificate of completion!

There is currently only an English version available, but all the other languages will be added in about a month. We intentionally postponed the translations a bit because we anticipate making minor changes to the course content in the coming weeks, based on your feedback.

The course contents

The course follows the proven template of the previous beginner courses. We begin with unboxing and basic setup, then fast-forward to the first sample print.

The course includes a very thorough lesson about PrusaSlicer (and EasyPrint, too!), covers the basics of printer maintenance, and provides an introduction to 3D modeling, using Autodesk Fusion and Tinkercad.

As mentioned above, we also focus on the specific features of the XL, so there is a whole lesson about multi-material printing.

To some extent, the course content addresses the same topics (i.e., initial setup and printer maintenance) as the existing user handbook and online help pages, but here, we aimed to make the information more streamlined and accessible for beginners, featuring more pictures and short videos, and extra tips and tricks.

Throughout the course, we use Buddy the Pug as a sample model, painted in PrusaSlicer to utilize all five tools of the 5-toolhead XL variant (there are 2-toolhead and Single-toolhead variants, too).

We also designed a fun new model to showcase the XL’s large print volume: a life-sized knight helmet for LARP, cosplay, or just for casual knighting around. 🙃

Multiple Prusa Academy course licenses

This is perhaps a good opportunity to remind you of the multiple license option! When purchasing any of the Prusa Academy courses (most of them currently discounted as part of the Back to School deal!), you can click on the + icon and add multiple copies to your cart, the same as with any other product.

After the purchase, you can assign the extra licenses to other people simply by entering their email addresses. Then you can use the course, for example, for educational purposes or as an onboarding tool, or simply offer an extra license to your friend as a gift!

What’s in the pipeline

As we already teased in the previous Prusa Academy release article, we are now working on a miniature painting course, a dedicated course about airbrushing, and also some new 3D modeling courses as alternatives to the existing Autodesk Fusion course. 😉

Happy learning, and stay tuned! 🧡
