More than 55.000 protective face shields 3D printed in less than three weeks by our factory alone! Take a look at the gallery of Czech first responders using our shields (on the Czech version of our website only, but this is mostly about photos so I hope you don’t mind). And we have some tips for you about how you can help too. What started as our local initiative to print protective face shields has turned into a massive endeavor driven by 3D printing communities worldwide. Tens of thousands of people began to print protective face shields using the design we have made available, helping hundreds of thousands of frontline staff – doctors, firefighters, police officers, social workers and many other brave people who risk their lives every day in these difficult times. Our design files at PrusaPrinters.org reached over 250.000 downloads and maker communities became a trending topic in media across the world.
It’s an incredible collaborative effort that goes far beyond anything that 3D printing communities have ever accomplished. This is not just about printing a lot of parts, it’s about management, planning, cooperation, collection, and distribution. Far more than one could imagine. There’s so much good work being done and we’re incredibly proud of the entire 3D printing community. The complexity of the situation and the importance of 3D printing of PPE is perfectly summarized by our friend Destin Sandlin from Smarter Every Day – definitely worth the watch!
We’re doing our best to help where we can. Our in-house production of protective shields in the Czech Republic has been running for two weeks straight and we managed to donate 55.000 shields to doctors and many other professionals in need. And since we’re aware of the challenges that many of you must overcome, we decided to summarize our findings and other important information at prusa3d.com/covid19 – this also includes vital information about disinfection. We asked leading Czech hospitals and laboratories to test various disinfecting methods, so we could share reliable and conclusive data. At prusa3d.com/covid19, there’s also a dedicated community section highlighting some of the groups that joined the cause. If you wish to be listed there, please let us know.
So, once again: thank you, everyone, who joined the cause. Please, stay strong and stay safe. We can get through this together and I hope I will be able to write the next big update in somewhat happier times.
PS: Just when I’m finishing this short update, Linus Tech Tips has also released a video about printing protective face shields. Wow! I’m so glad we can work with such great people on this good thing. Thank you!
Hello! i am hoping to print some of these amazing masks over here in the UK 🙂
I am only 13, so please understand if i don’t know that much.
I can’t push my print times below 5 hours per print, does anyone know a way to decrease print time, without going above 60 mm/s. i cannot go above this speed as my printer is very low quality (worth £130), and i cannot reliably print above 0.2 mm layer heights.
any help is appreciated,
Zac:)
Hello Zac,
I’m thought a bit about your question, and to answer it try to use faster extrusion, bigger nozzel, and taller layer height. I’m also only thirteen so my knowledge of 3Dprinting is also limited. Hop this helps!
What specifically is your problem?
I have an Anycubic I3 Mega and print the combined headband and reinforcement in 2 hours and 30 minutes using a standard 0.4mm nozzle.
My settings are:
Material: PETG at 225C
Layer height: 0.25mm
Print speed: 60mm/s
Travel speed: 180mm/s
Retraction: 6mm at 65mm/s
ATB,
Neil
hello neil, i also use an anycubic i3 mega! could you possibly share your slicer profile, as it could be useful.
my main issue is that my printer seems to be limited to 60 mm/s, and if i try to make the speed any higher it simply stalls and doesn’t do anything.
thank you for your help,
Zac 🙂
Try to play with thicker extrusion. We are currently printing at 0.64mm, it can greatly reduce print time without compromising strength
Whoops, heh heh didn’t read the bottom half but try the higher layer height and the bigger nozzel. That may help to speed things up. If you can, try and stack as many headbands on top of each other in the 3d model to decrease the amount of wasted time between prints.
thank you for your suggestions 🙂
i would like to try a larger nozzle, and i definitely would help. however i cannot find larger width nozzles for the anycubic i3 mega (it uses an E3D V5 clone)
if i find some i will definitely save up to order one 🙂
thank you,
Zac
Hey, Zac
If you are going to try to drill a hole, please be careful!
If you can’t find a bigger nozzle size, try to drill a hole in a spare nozzle with a 1mm drill bit. you may also want to tinker with the slicer settings too. Keep in mind that I am also pretty new and most of my knowledge comes from youtube. Hope this helps!
Actually, now that I think about it don’t drill a hole in your nozzle as it could cost a bit and you could get injured. Please don’t do it.
Don’t worry, i found a set that can be imported 🙂
thank you for the tips!

Thanks for this article. The workers at your plant are great fellows! I would like to wish them the best in making these shields. the plastic counterpart has many advantages. I’ve heard they can be reused just by cleaning with soapy water or common disinfectants. Plastic shields are more comfortable to wear than cloth masks, and they form a barrier that prevents people from easily touching their faces with dirty hands. The shield helps to better observe social distancing – through the transparent surface of the mask, you can see the movements of the interlocutor’s lips, which improves speech perception. Also, a simulation study showed that the shield reduces the direct exposure to the virus by 92% at a distance of 1.80 meters from the infected one. I learned this information from videos on YouTube in which the authors talk about means of protection against viruses. I found about five dozen videos on this topic there and noticed that most often these videos were posted by channels that had almost 23 thousand subscribers! I am sure this is because the owners of such channels have repeatedly used the help of https://soclikes.com/ to increase the number of subscribers.
